If I wasn’t right, I’d join the greens.

This week at their conference the greens passed a motion, zionism is racism. And if I wasn’t right wing, that would make me want to join them. I believe this is a powerful, brave and important move. Let’s be honest it’s purely symbolic as the greens will also be a fringe party.

Let’s be clear the October 7th terrorist attack was unforgivable, as is the reality that the Israeli people have for always had to live with neighbours on all sides who actively want to harm them.

I agree completely that Israel has the right to defend itself and it had a duty to do all it could to bring the hostages home.

However what the world has seen in Gaza is genocide. It is clear that Israel has bombed the country with no care for the protection of civilians. We know that Hamas do use civilians as shields by means of having their bases in public infrastructure such as hospitals and schools. But it appears that Israel have used this as a green light to blanket bomb everyone and everywhere they can. Journalists have been killed, aid has been restricted and Israel have made little effort to hide their desire to annex Palestine – cheered on by the wotsit in the Whitehouse.

But my biggest frustration is that no seems brave enough to call out the genocide for what it is. Israel has some how made it that any criticism of the Israeli government is antisemitism, when it is nothing of the sort.

I frankly couldn’t care less about what religion a government is, if they are doing wrong they are doing wrong, whether they are Hindu, Sikh, Muslim or Jewish. A cunt is a cunt.

The slippery surface of antisemitism is designed by Israel to be a ice rink for politicians. This is because Jewish is both a religion and an ethnicity.

Israel hold dear the Balfour Declaration that planted the seeds of Israel’s formation. However most people gloss over this line, “it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine”.

In other words the Balfour declaration was making it clear that Israel was not to be at the expense of Palestine people already living in the land. But that is far from the reality we have seen.

Zionism is racist. Netanyahu and Ben-Gvir don’t hide it and calling that out has fuck all to do with the perfectly pleasant religiously Jewish people living all over the world.

But one thing to clear up here is what you mean about Zionism. Because some people think being a zionist is supporting the existence of Israel. However it’s more than that, Wikipedia state “Zionists wanted to create a Jewish state in Palestine with as much land, as many Jews, and as few Palestinian Arabs as possible” and that is racist.

So I am proud of the greens, I think they have done something most other parties wouldn’t dare to do. And for that reason if I didn’t disagree on everything else I would be joining.
